Bowmore Whisky

Bowmore is one of the oldest and most revered distilleries on Islay, with a history reaching back to 1779 and a reputation built on a distinctive marriage of peat smoke, coastal character and surprising elegance. Few distilleries have done more to define the idea of Islay whisky for drinkers around the world, yet Bowmore has always stood slightly apart from the most forceful styles of the island, often displaying a more balanced interplay of smoke, fruit and soft maritime notes.

Over the years Bowmore has released whiskies of greatly varying style and reception, but its modern range has helped reaffirm the strengths that made the distillery famous in the first place. Core expressions and more recent collections alike have returned the focus to what Bowmore does best: richly textured Islay malt with depth, poise and a character that brings together peat with citrus, tropical fruit, spice and salt.

Small-batch and limited releases have played an important role in that renewed enthusiasm. Earlier series such as Tempest helped remind drinkers just how compelling Bowmore could be at cask strength, whilst today the distillery continues to build on that reputation through permanent bottlings, sherry-led releases and high-profile limited editions. If Bowmore remains one of Islay's great historic names, it is also because it continues to demonstrate that heritage and innovation need not be at odds.
