Blanton's is a Kentucky straight bourbon produced at Buffalo Trace Distillery in Frankfort, Kentucky. Introduced in 1984 under master distiller Elmer T. Lee, it is widely recognised as the bourbon that helped define the modern single barrel category, drawing on the legacy of Colonel Albert B. Blanton, a former distillery president known for selecting preferred casks from the warehouse.
The whiskey is made from Buffalo Trace's higher-rye bourbon mash bill and matured in Warehouse H, a metal-clad rickhouse linked to Blanton's distinctive style. Each bottling comes from an individual barrel rather than being blended across multiple casks, so small variations in character form part of its appeal.
Blanton's Original Single Barrel remains the flagship expression, with Gold, Straight From the Barrel and other variants offered in selected markets. The style is typically rounded and polished, displaying caramel, vanilla, orange peel, baking spice and toasted oak, with sufficient structure to satisfy bourbon enthusiasts and enough smoothness to account for its broad following.
