Nikka Taketsuru is a Japanese pure malt whisky named after Masataka Taketsuru, the Scottish-trained founder of Nikka and one of the central figures in the development of Japanese whisky. It brings together malt whiskies from Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyo distilleries, combining Yoichi's firmer, lightly smoky coastal character with the softer fruit and elegance associated with Miyagikyo.
The current Taketsuru Pure Malt is a no-age-statement expression, following the discontinuation of the previous aged releases as Japanese whisky demand put pressure on mature stocks. Rather than presenting itself as a single malt, it is a blended malt built around balance, texture and harmony, reflecting Nikka's enduring emphasis on blending as a craft in its own right.
In style, Taketsuru is composed and gently complex, with orchard fruit, malt sweetness, vanilla, spice and a subtle thread of smoke. It is an approachable but serious whisky: refined enough for newcomers to Japanese whisky, yet layered enough to demonstrate the quiet precision and restraint that characterise Nikka at its best.
