Chita is a Japanese single grain whisky from Suntory, produced at the Chita Distillery in Aichi Prefecture. Founded in 1972 on the Chita Peninsula, the distillery was created to make grain whisky for Suntory's blends, playing an important supporting role alongside the company's Yamazaki and Hakushu malt distilleries.
Unlike Japan's better-known single malts, Chita is centred on corn-based grain whisky made through continuous column distillation. Suntory produces several styles of grain spirit at the site, giving its blenders a broad palette of light, clean and more full-bodied components for use in whiskies such as Hibiki, as well as in Chita's own single grain expression.
The main Chita release is typically matured using a combination of bourbon, sherry and wine casks, resulting in a soft, elegant whisky with notes of honey, vanilla, citrus, melon, mint and gentle spice. Its texture is smooth and light, making it well suited to highballs as well as simple chilled or neat serves.
Chita shows a quieter but essential side of Japanese whisky: the precision of grain distilling and the blending discipline behind Suntory's broader house style. It is a refined, easy-drinking whisky, but its real interest lies in how delicacy, balance and technical control can create character without relying on weight or intensity.
