Monkey 47 Gin

Monkey 47 is a German gin from the Black Forest, launched in 2010 and now one of the most recognisable names in the modern premium gin movement. Its name refers both to the 47 botanicals used in the recipe and to its 47% ABV, while the "Schwarzwald Dry Gin" identity places the region at the centre of the brand's character.

The brand is produced by Black Forest Distillers and is owned by Pernod Ricard, which first acquired a majority stake in 2016 and later took full ownership. Monkey 47's production story combines traditional gin botanicals with regional ingredients, most notably lingonberries, and uses soft Black Forest water as part of its distinctive profile.

The original Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin is complex, aromatic and highly detailed, with juniper, citrus, herbs, spice, florals, forest fruit and a dry, peppery finish. The wider range includes Sloe Gin, annual Distiller's Cut releases and occasional special editions, each exploring a different facet of the brand's botanical intensity.

Monkey 47 has become a benchmark for contemporary craft gin because it manages to feel both eccentric and carefully controlled. It is unmistakably flavour-led, but not gimmicky: a gin with real aromatic depth, well suited to a precise gin and tonic, a Martini or any serve where its layered botanical character can take the lead.
