Martell is one of the great historic houses of Cognac, founded in 1715 by Jean Martell, a merchant from Jersey who settled in the Charente. Now owned by Pernod Ricard, it is regarded as the oldest of the major Cognac houses and remains closely associated with refinement, long maturation and the art of blending.
The house style is shaped in part by its use of eaux-de-vie from across the Cognac region, including a notable emphasis on the Borderies cru, prized for its aromatic, floral and nutty qualities. Martell is also known for distilling clear wines, a choice that helps produce a smooth, elegant spirit with fruit, blossom and spice at its centre.
The range spans accessible expressions such as VS and VSOP through to Martell Cordon Bleu, first created in 1912 and still one of the house's defining bottlings. XO, Chanteloup XXO and L'Or de Jean Martell sit further up the portfolio, showing richer layers of dried fruit, polished oak, candied citrus, spice and rancio complexity.
Martell is best understood as a Cognac house of grace and precision rather than heaviness. Its finest expressions bring together aromatic lift, supple texture and mature depth, offering a polished introduction to classic Cognac for both newer drinkers and long-standing enthusiasts.
