Craigellachie is a Speyside single malt Scotch whisky with a character that stands apart from the region's softer, fruit-led stereotype. Founded in the late nineteenth century in the village of Craigellachie, near the meeting of the Spey and Fiddich rivers, the distillery has long played an important role in Scotch blending while retaining a distinctive style of its own.
Now part of John Dewar & Sons, owned by Bacardi, Craigellachie is closely associated with Dewar's blended Scotch, but its official single malt range has brought greater attention to the distillery's robust house style. Traditional production choices, including the use of worm-tub condensers, help create a spirit with notable weight, texture and a gently sulphury edge.
The core range includes mature age-stated expressions such as 13, 17 and 23 Year Old, with bottlings generally presented at 46% ABV, non-chill filtered and without added colour. The whisky often shows a mix of orchard fruit, malt, waxiness, spice and savoury depth, making it less conventionally polished than many Speyside malts but all the more memorable for it.
Craigellachie appeals to drinkers who enjoy single malts with substance and individuality. It offers Speyside richness through a more muscular lens, balancing fruit and oak with an old-fashioned, slightly rugged complexity.
