Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

Blended Malt Scotch Whisky is one of the newer-sounding terms in Scotch whisky, though the style itself is much older than the name suggests. The category refers to a Scotch whisky made by combining two or more single malt Scotch whiskies from different distilleries. Until November 2011 this style was more commonly described as vatted malt, but the current legal term is now Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Like all Scotch whisky, it must be distilled and matured in Scotland, matured in oak casks for at least three years, and bottled at a minimum strength of 40% ABV.

The change in terminology proved controversial, and many distillers and enthusiasts felt that "blended malt" risked confusing drinkers by making the category sound too similar to Blended Scotch Whisky, which contains both malt and grain whisky. Nevertheless, the legal distinction is clear: a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky contains only single malt Scotch whiskies, with no grain whisky in the blend.

For many whisky drinkers, blended malt remains one of the most fascinating Scotch categories: capable of combining the individuality of single malts from different distilleries while delivering a level of complexity and balance that is distinct from both single malt and conventional blended Scotch.
