Blended Malt Scotch Whisky

At midnight on November 22nd 2011 Blended Malt was made the legal term for describing a whisky comprised of anything including and upwards of two individual, component single malt whiskies. Prior to this, the term in use had been Vatted Malt. The Scotch Whisky Association’s decision to make the change has been greeted with considerable resistance from distillers and whisky experts alike, many believing that rather than avoiding confusion for the customer, the change may in fact have quite the opposite effect.

There are relatively few Blended Malts on the market, with Johnny Walker’s Green Label being the most prominent. However, this bottling will be phased out over 2013, much to the disappointment of a number of loyal fans, and leaves Blended Malt lacking such a widely available category leader. Smaller companies such a Compass Box have long extolled the virtues of the Blended Malt and in keeping with this connection, bottled 'The Last Vatted Malt' in commemoration of the style’s long history and relevance to their company. This historic whisky was greeted with wide acclaim and serves to remind whisky lovers of the sheer potential of Blended Malt as a category.
